Why travel insurance?

Do you usually think of your vacation as an investment? If not, think again. When a once-in-a-lifetime experience goes wrong, you can’t exactly just yell, “Do over!”

Unless you’ve got travel insurance. “If something goes wrong — if your trip is interrupted or if you have to cancel — you can recover some or all of your costs,” said Huff Post Travel, paraphrasing Christopher Elliott’s new book, “The World’s Smartest Traveler.” “About one in three travelers buys insurance for a trip, according to the U.S. Travel Insurance Association. Should you be one of them?”

If any of the following are true, the answer is yes.

● Is your trip expensive?

● Are you a nervous traveler?

● Are you taking a cruise or package tour?

● Do you have a complex or lengthy itinerary

● Are you leaving the country?

● Are you on Medicare?

When Rick Steves listed the type of risks that travel insurance is designed to cover, he included accidents, illness, missed flights, cancelled tours, lost baggage, theft and emergency evacuation, among others.

Some risks are entirely unexpected. “A close relative dies just before you leave for a Caribbean vacation, and you have to cancel your nonrefundable trip to attend the funeral,” said Gregory Karp of the Chicago Tribune. Others are foreseeable: “you’re hiking in the Alps, have an accident and need to be airlifted off a mountain.”
