Moving Company Insurance Tip: How to Avoid Goal Setting Gone Wrong
With 2013 just around the corner, I’ve been spending time on business goal setting. Over the years, we’ve all heard the SMART goal criteria (Specific – Measureable – Attainable – Relevant – Time-Bound). The formula sounds easy, but surprisingly, goal-setting is more difficult than it sounds! If you’re struggling with moving company goal-setting, you may find these real-world observations useful:
- Mistake #1: Making goals too broad. Sure, you want achieve a certain revenue figure next year. Unfortunately saying it won’t make it true. You have to answer the “how” question.
- Mistake #2: Making goals too specific. Make sure goals focus on the intended big picture result. For example, a goal focused on speed or turnaround time may inadvertently sacrifice company safety and lead to more insurance claims.
- Mistake #3: Being overly ambitious and unrealistic. Shoot for stars, but make sure you have established processes and quality controls in place before you implement operational changes, market expansions or big marketing campaigns for your moving company. There are countless case studies of companies that rushed decisions to achieve their goals, and ultimately failed, because they did not think of all the potential pitfalls.
- Mistake #4: Making goals too plentiful. Set five goals or less. If you have more than that, you lose focus and impact. Individual employee goals should support the overarching moving company goals.
- Mistake #5: Setting and forgetting. For goals to be meaningful, the moving company has to live and breathe them. They must be discussed at every staff meeting, integrated into performance reviews and revisited and adjusted every quarter. Throw a company-wide pizza party to celebrate when you achieve key milestones throughout the year. Small rewards keep everyone focused and pulling in the same direction.
