In 2020, the pandemic turned a lot of moving trends and assumptions upside down. Now 2021 is underway, and it’s time to check up on the current state of the relocation industry. Here’s what’s happening now.
People Are Heading South
According to U-Haul’s Migration Trends study, Tennessee earned the top spot for one-way trips from other states.
United Van Lines’ 44th annual study of customers’ migration patterns also shows that many people are heading South, according to U.S. News. South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama and Arkansas all made the top 10 list for inbound moves, although Idaho earned the top spot in this study.
But where are people leaving? New Jersey earned the top spot for outbound moves, followed by New York, Illinois, Connecticut, and California. Many moving decisions were impacted by the pandemic, new work arrangements, and a desire to be closer to family.
Companies Are Fleeing California
Companies are moving, too. Corporate relocation companies may have a lot of work as more companies decide to leave California and Silicon Valley in particular. According to the Motley Fool, Oracle has announced that it’s moving its headquarters to Texas. Hewlett-Packard and Elon Musk have also left California or announced plans to do so.
Many factors are playing a role, including the recent switch to remote work that makes location less important than it used to be. Cost is also a big factor. Regardless of the exact cause, the result is clear: many companies are moving, and Silicon Valley’s reputation as the premier tech hub may be under threat.
Truck Drivers Face New Challenges
Truck drivers have always had to navigate bad road conditions and risky drivers. In 2020, however, new and unexpected dangers emerged. First, there was the pandemic, and drivers had to worry about disinfecting their hands on the road and wearing facemasks.
Protests have become another concern. If a truck driver ends up in the middle of a protest, the situation can turn dangerous quickly. According to CDL Life, a new program has been developed to help drivers navigate this tricky situation. You can also read some tips and watch a safety video here.
It’s a Good Time to Go Green
According to GreenBiz, 2021 promises to be a pivotal year for electric vehicles, especially electric trucks. In the U.S. and Canada, we’re set to see more zero-emissions freight vehicles from more manufacturers, giving fleet owners better options.
Technology is improving, too, both in terms of performance and cost. This Forbes article states that batteries are ready to power long-range freight trucks, and BE and fuel-cell long-range trucks will beat diesel trucks on cost soon.
